2026 William James Young Scholar Prize

The WILLIAM JAMES SOCIETY (WJS) would like to announce that it will be offering its annual WJS YOUNG SCHOLAR PRIZE to the young scholar (within five years of the Ph.D.) who submits the essay that best explores the thought of James.

The prize will include: (1) the opportunity to read the paper during the WJS session at the 2027 meeting of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division in Boston, Massachusetts , (2) $600 to subsidize travel to that meeting, and (3) the possibility of publishing the paper in William James Studies.

Submissions should be prepared in accordance with the guidelines (here) of William James Studies manuscript submission information. 

All papers must be submitted to WJS Secretary, Alexis Dianda, and received by September 15th, 2026. After the submissions have been considered by the prize committee, the winner will be announced in October. 


The 5th European Pragmatism Conference will take place in St. Gallen, Switzerland, August 20-22, 2025. 

On Thursday, February 20th, Piers H.G. Stephens of the University of Georgia will speak on “Pragmatic Ecologism: William James and Environmental Philosophy” in the Dewey Center (Morris Library Basement Room 0044) at 11:00 am CST.

The Dewey Center (Carbondale, IL) announces that on Friday, October 4th at noon (CST), there will be a lunchtime talk by Crispin Sartwell entitled “Realism, the Characteristically American Philosophy.”

October 17-19, the Dewey Center will host a Workshop on John Dewey, Race, and Colonialism. Papers will be provided to registered attendees, to be read ahead of the workshop.

Thursday, November 7th at Noon, Roger Ward (Georgetown College, editor of The Pluralist) will give a Dewey Center lunchtime talk on “Dewey, Meliorism and the Task of Community.” More details forthcoming.

The Dewey Center is currently planning to host all 3 events in the Center and to set up a live stream for each. They look forward to seeing you there!
